ITC 298: 8 Easy Wins for On-page SEO

Assignment 3:
8 Easy Wins for On-page SEO

Author Dr. Pete gives eight effective SEO tricks to put in action that won’t take much time, focusing on eCommerce site architecture. He admits he doesn’t include changing URLs as a good SEO tactic, and focuses on the low-risk. This assumes that the person can access title tag code and META tags as well as body text. One thing I noticed is that changing TITLE tags on a WordPress site might lose readers if the page URL also changes automatically. Care must be taken to be sure the URL doesn’t change when the TITLE tag does. The TITLE tag is the same as the H1 headline tag in Wordpress. He gives examples of how to phrase TITLE tags so they are unique and shorter and in the right order.

Paraphrasing, here are the 8:

1. Avoid duplicate content on separate pages. Use redirect pages if there is duplicate copy on the same website. (I found this to be very true with Get Lost Magazine’s content.)

2. Pages that you want to rank need unique, descriptive, and keyword-targeted TITLE tags, plain and simple. Avoid having the same title tag on similar pages.

3. Unique META description tags show up in snippets on a search results page, and carries a uniqueness factor. Make them attractive to visitors.

4. Shorten TITLE tags, don’t make the keywords compete with other pages on the same site.

5. Reorder TITLE tags, with the important and unique keywords at the front.

6. Add direct product links on home page if site is very deep. Featured products can be linked right to them instead of making the visitor dig.

7. Rewrite internal anchor tags so they have keywords in them.

8. Remove low-value links from your main page - Focus your link juice on links that people click on most.
